Like children (and grown ups) everywhere, Moo is obsessed with Frozen. It didnt surprise me that she wanted a Frozen dress.
I’ve followed many threads on Facebook about the pattern options for Elsa dresses. None were quite what I wanted for her. So we sat down together. The process of creating this dress was a little unorthodox. Moo and I drafted the cape. She was more involved in this process than with anything I’ve made her. The fabrics, on the whole, were from my existing stash, thanks to Granny donating to me. The cape was brushed cotton, with a turquoise organza.
We then drafted the back section of the skirt, with the train. We designed the skirt next. It has 5 layers – 2 layers of net, each gathered quite extensively, a lining, the main fabric, and an organza overlay (which overlays the entire dress). The skirt & train is teal dupioni. It was a a whole bunch of gathering – the lower net to the net, to the linining, to the main skirt, which had to be attached to the overlay!
We then decided on the different fabrics for each element. I sewed the skirt, and the cape. I then chose the bodice of the Mouse House Creations Caroline party dress for the top of the dress.
The bodice is a sequin fabric with silver organza overlay, lined with teal dupioni.
After trying the cape on as a “traditional” cape, we decided to attach it in a more Elsa-style, which brought the idea of it being removable. So it simply poppers on to the shoulders.
We had intended to put sleeves on, but when I fit tested the bodice, she decided she didn’t want them!
The bodice is snaps instead of zipper, as its dress up so quick and easy for her and her friends.
I utterly adored making this dress. It was something of a labour of love, and a learning curve for me, as it was a whole bunch of more awkward fabrics. And gave my new overlocker a real workout. But I am really pleased with how much she loves it! The intention is for beautiful sequin & silver thread embroidery to be added to skirt, cape and bodice. However, at the moment I cant get it away from her!
